The craft
Built Different.
No shortcuts. No compromises.
Every Takama piece begins with a question: is this good enough to wear on the mat, under pressure, for years? If the answer is anything less than yes, we start again.

WHY IT MATTERS
Apparel built for the long game
Most BJJ apparel is designed to a price. Takama is designed to a standard. We source from specialist mills in Japan and Portugal, work with manufacturers who understand the demands of grappling, and test every product through real training — not just lab conditions.
The result is apparel that performs on day one and holds its shape, colour, and structure through hundreds of washes. Gear you don't have to think about, because it never lets you down.
MATERIALS
Sourced with intention
Pearl Weave Canvas
Our Essentials GI uses a 350gsm pearl weave — lightweight enough for tournament weight classes and daily training without sacrificing durability. Sourced from a specialist mill with over 40 years of martial arts textile experience.
Single Weave Canvas
The Founders Collection gi uses a premium 450gsm single weave for a heavier, more structured feel. Stiffer collar, denser lapel — harder to grip, harder to wear down.
Four-Way Stretch
Our rash guards are cut from a four-way stretch fabric engineered for compression and recovery. It moves with you, stays tucked, and doesn't degrade under repeated washing.
Stretch Canvas Shorts
Fight shorts use a lightweight stretch canvas with a split hem for unrestricted movement. The waistband is reinforced with a double-layer drawcord system — it won't come loose mid-roll.
CONSTRUCTION
The details that matter
Reinforced stress points
Every high-tension area — collar joins, sleeve cuffs, knee panels — is double or triple stitched with high-tenacity thread rated for 200+ wash cycles.
Hand-finished collars
The collar is the most contested part of any gi. Ours are hand-finished with a rubber core and canvas wrap, designed to resist grip fatigue and hold their shape over time.
Embroidered, not printed
Every Takama emblem is embroidered with gold thread — not heat-transferred or screen-printed. Embroidery doesn't crack, peel, or fade. It's a permanent mark of quality.
Precision construction
All gis are cut and constructed with precision. Sleeve and trouser lengths, jacket skirt dimensions, and collar thickness are all built to exacting standards.
Pre-shrunk fabric
Gi fabric is pre-shrunk before cutting. You'll see minimal change in fit after the first wash — and none after the second.
500+ hours of mat testing
Every product goes through extended mat testing before release. We train in it, wash it repeatedly, and stress-test the seams before it earns the Takama name.
THE TAKAMA PROMISE
"We don't make gis for everyone. We make them for those who take the mat seriously."
If a Takama product fails due to a manufacturing defect within 90 days, we replace it. No forms. No arguments. That's how confident we are in what we build.
